Facebook vs Websites

Here’s a question we get quite a lot “Do I need an actual website, can’t I just use Facebook?”

Short answer, yes you can.
Albeit with some very serious limitations.

Don’t get us wrong, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and even YouTube, they all have their place and roll to play and we recommend all businesses have dedicated Social Media profiles.

Back to Facebook and a question to you.
Does your Facebook page accurately reflect your businesses services or products?

Are these products and services that you offer easily found when searching online?

Most probably not.
That’s not Facebook’s strength.

Facebook is great for building communities, generating a following and keeping your viewers informed of news, views and even day to day activities. It’s cheap and costs you nothing but your time and effort.

It should be worth noting that your time is valuable.
Do have enough time to use Facebook properly? If not, it’s not going to work for you.
Facebook success requires a constant flow of content, you’re not going to get people liking and sharing when you don’t keep your content flowing.

Now back to one of the limitations mentioned above – is the content that you are publishing on Facebook searchable to anyone outside of Facebook?
Most probably not.

Statistically, Google is currently the most utilised search engine used across most countries.
Google’s search engine is very good, in fact it’s very very good.
To highlight the difference head over to google.com and type in the following search ‘plumber New Plymouth’ and have a quick look at the results. All highly relevant.
Now head over to Facebook.com and type in ‘plumber New Plymouth’, notice the difference?

That pretty much sums it up for us.
Your website is a searchable source of information online, your Facebook page is not.

Our strategy is to encourage our clients to have a website that accurately lists your products and services, your contact information (and more). We then encourage our clients to setup their Social Media profiles and link both your website to your Social profiles and your Social profiles to your website. There’s a connection there.

Social media is like a fishing ground, it’s all right there but the challenge is to always ensure that you are trying to get people from Facebook to your website. We have a number of clients that are utilising this approach and the results speak for themselves.

Just to digress for a moment, one thing we notice that a lot of Facebook profiles have no contact details… “Guys do you want to sell stuff or what?”. We recommend checking, it’s surprising the number of businesses (both large and small) that have forgotten to add this detail.

We tend to treat Facebook as an appetiser to your business, where your website is considered the main course, or to put it another way – Facebook tempts customers to look further for ALL the information they require and that place is ideally a well-functioning, attractive website.

The ability to self-manage content on websites has come a long way in recent years.
WordPress is cost effective, easy to use and yes – you can add and change your own content and images on your website.

About Image uses WordPress as our go to web development platform. The design, look and feel are all bespoke.
